A series of comic panels from the comic strip THE OTHER END featuring a generic guy speaking to the reader. Hey there! I'm Paxton from Facebook or Google or whatever, here to give you an important message about generations. Fact is, I'd like to speak to all you boomers and Gen X Karens. Do not trust the young!! They're lazy and socialists and they want to destroy everything you hold dear! Next, to all you Milennials and Gen Z champs... Do not trust the old! They're MAGA monsters and they want to destroy your future! Don't you all feel better! You see, the important thing is that you pick which generation you wanna hate and focus all your attention on that. Because generations definitely exist and aren't meaningless constructs, and we're not stealing your data. Don't vote!
A reminder for the start of 2026: Tech companies are NOT your friend. They exist to make money - literally, that is their purpose.

"But the correlation between school AI adoption and personal AI relationships is clear across multiple behaviors."
Ummm...this also seems bad.
So much of this connects with the importance of student choice in independent reading. Students who get sparked into reading don't usually do it with shared texts--it's that ONE book or author that hooks them into a love of reading.
(Not saying shared texts aren't important. They are.)
I've been having conversations with other profs this week about this change of pedagogy. I see other non-English areas starting to lean more into the writing process, writing during classtime, and away from the product. It's a good thing.

For anyone jumping with excitement, temper yourself.
Yes, we need to continue adjusting to and reassessing AI in the classroom.
Doing so with a grant from Big Tech with a dog in the AI game? That's problematic. #EduSky #iteachEnglish #edtech
Students internalize that "sounding" a certain way is what's desired in the writing transaction, so if there's a way to make that happen, they will take advantage. I've said from the get-go that the chief challenge of LLMs is figuring out what we should value when it comes to the writing students do

But SHOULD WE? What does the research say?
I dug into some studies and this is what I found. (tl;dr: human is better, but not by much)

The school year is nigh. It's time to face AI dilemmas again.
Should you integrate AI or ban it? I can't answer that for you. But here are thoughts I shared with our adjuncts about it.

You've got a great looking product!!
I've spent several weeks researching the different journaling approaches writers use.
Here's what I found out, and maybe one of them is one you'd like to try!

A long and depressing piece, but the answers are all in there: high school and college writing are not going to be destroyed by AI unless teachers and professors let it or help. They will only be revived by structuring classes around process and paper.

1) They decreased anxiety
2) Improved my feedbk
3) Resulted in better quality of writing

Teachers don't need more tech. They need smaller classes and more (paid) time for prep and instruction. But alas, the tech option means more profit for billionaires, while the latter would cost billionaires more in taxes. And so, in our current kleptocracy, tech is what teachers are going to get...

Last week, researchers released a fascinating study about
AI 🖥️, writing ✏️, & the brain 🧠
The gist: Make students use their brains first--the learning will be longer lasting.
I condensed it all here. #iteachEnglish #ELA #EduSky

This is a fraught topic, but one that deserves our attention, and thinking things through with Marcus is always a joy 🙂
Brett's book, as well as AI in the WRiting Classroom, have really guided my AI use for this coming year. I'd dabbled in AI in the classroom, but Brett really made the concepts and uses more concrete! #iteachenglish
