Personally, I always thought the original scripts for scream and S2 (the latter’s original ending featuring cotton weary and Sid stabbing each other and bleeding out on the stage) would make an AMAZING 2 act opera. It’s great American Gothic.

So, then, in a musical horror, it tends to involve a lot of winking and acknowledging that it is a ridiculous mixture. I think Sweeney Todd is obviously the king of the horror musicals (on stage) and that is basically an operetta; Phantom of the opera is a musical, but it has little actual horror.

I can either believe in a supernatural horror, or I can believe that people will burst into song, but I can’t do both. Whereas, if you introduce me to a world where people are constantly singing, then it becomes less of a cognitive dissonance if they belt a number than run.

I think the issue is that most horror lens itself to opera, not musicals.

Musicals expect you to believe that people will burst into song; opera is presented entirely in song. It basically comes down to a matter of suspension of disbelief. As in, one can only suspend so much.
