January isn’t looking as dark and foreboding as usual - a brilliant learning opportunity for Irish teachers. Great to see @carlhendrick.substack.com engage with Irish education centres. Well done @clanavtra.bsky.social.

My letter in today’s @irishtimes.com on behalf of the @irishsciteach.bsky.social.

Delay to English & Accounting makes sense (let’s get it right folks) but a delay to the AACs in senior science also makes sense.

Well, the TUI have capitulated while the ASTI sit on the fence. While the document is presented loosely as reform supports, in reality it’s a contract for the unions. The 3% bargaining clause should never be linked to reform supports.

Breda O’Brien is spot on in her article in today’s @irishtimes.com - the Department have decided that bullying teachers into reform is easier than actually funding or supporting it properly.

I’m not sure where to begin with this one … #edchatIE

In my experience excellent school leaders were also excellent classroom teachers. School leaders need a broad view on education and not just look inward to their own school. Also, good leaders display a keen interest in learning. #edchatIE

I think teaching and learning needs to be much higher on the agenda.

It’s hard to know the national picture but we don’t get many opportunities to discuss pedagogy.

I’d like more.

Looking at Our School 2022: a quality framework — Julian Girdham A recent paper by Craig Skerritt of the Manchester Institute of Education examines the document Looking at Our School (2022) with a sharp eye.

Craig Skerritt showed how flawed LAOS in practical terms in his paper: www.juliangirdham.com/blog/looking... #edchatie

School leadership seems to be knowing that LAOS exists and to use it in interview questions. It provides little practical advice for prospective school leaders or current school leaders. #edchatIE

I think there may be a different conversation to be had.
Instead of looking at school leadership - is it time to look at the demands on schools.
What was the old phrase, "when society itches, schools must scratch"?
The pressure to manage the multiple and conflicting demands is immense

I think it’s important that school leaders do take an active interest in T&L. Teachers, especially younger teachers, need to see a strong connection between leadership and what happens in the classroom. #edchatIE

I suppose something to bridge the gap between AP1 holders and DP, which can take some of the administrative pressures off school leaders. Or, on the flip side, provide an earlier stepping stone to leadership. #edchatIE

I think that’s a key point Julian … teaching and learning (the principal point of schools) is often lower down the priority list for overburdened school leaders. #edchatIE

LAOS provides a definition for leadership in schools but lacks a path to get there. #edchatIE

Also keen to hear ideas on fostering leadership potential in our students. Obvious outlets include sport and other extra curricular programmes but should there be a leadership programme in schools? #edchatIE

Hello Joe. Humphrey Jones here - science teacher in Dublin. Big challenge for schools is providing enough leadership opportunities for teachers. Not sure the current AP1 / AP2 system works effectively. Should there be a 3rd tier? Would be interested in hear people’s thoughts on that. #edchatIE
