Subtract the 116,16 USD subscription fee, and you are left with a profit of 622,19 USD for a year's worth of posting (and mental damage from the replies 🙃). A good bit of this will find its way to the right charities.

First of all, something very few will ever talk about openly: add revenue. In the past year this account has made a grand total of 738,35 USD in revenue sharing.

As it is the end of the year, I thought I might as well give a glimpse behind the scenes of this account and share some of the data behind it (Twitter data).

This also has an adverse effect on the range of shells meant to be fired with propellant charges originally designed for smaller chamber sizes, like those on L/23 and L/39 guns used on the M109.

Another fun little titbit is that L/52 guns tend to have a larger chamber size to accommodate larger propellant charges.

L/39 barrels are cheaper and faster to produce (and import) than their L/52 counterparts. This is all while offering the same performance with the most commonly used shell (M107) as an L/52 would.

This shell and its propellant charges were meant to achieve their maximum range when fired from an L/39 barrel.

Increase the barrel length to L/52, and now there is not enough propellant to push the shell all the way down the barrel, resulting in a slight decrease in maximum range.

From here on out these lengths will be expressed as L/39 and L/52 for ease of reading.

Now as to why such a system would still hold value. This all comes down to the most common artillery shell in Ukrainian service and one that they are now producing themselves, the US-designed M107.

Let us start off with explaining what 52 and 39 calibre even mean. In short, this refers to the length of the barrel expressed in how many times it is the length of its own calibre. A 39-calibre long barrel on a 155 mm howitzer will be 39 x 155 mm = 6.045 mm or just over 6 metres.

So, why does Ukraine want a 39-calibre variant of the 2S22?

The UK, for its part, is expected to place a ~70-unit order under this framework agreement through the European arms procurement agency OCCAR.

A first tranche of 84 vehicles worth 1.2 billion € has been ordered under this framework contract. Four of these are trials samples, of which one is for the UK, with the remaining 80 series production vehicles going to Germany.
