Zohran Mamdani doesn’t make me, an American Jew, feel unsafe.

Having the Coast Guard, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security, decide that a swastika isn’t really a symbol of hate? That makes me, an American Jew, feel pretty damn unsafe.

Any good posts or things you think I should include in Friday's lecture?

And to be honest, these are things I’ve only learned by watching students struggle during the pandemic and also dating a special ed teacher. And I’ve become a better and more fair instructor for it

Profs, let’s stop pretending like we have taken education classes outside of our field of expertise

For example, I need text to speech for longer readings and students now can get this. I could have done way better in school and learned more of accommodations were more common in the 90s and early 00s.

And for many of us who are neurodivergent or have other needs, we were in school before reasonable accommodations were more common, so we think β€œI did it and so can they.” But think about how much more you could have achieved if you had what you needed.

We leave the determination of reasonable accommodation to the experts, and our job as professors is to accommodate as instructed.

In fact, we can learn a lot about good teaching by considering which accommodations might help all students if built into our policies (e.g. extensions and recordings)

I usually give a lecture in my grad-level survey design class about political polling. This year I want to update it and focus more on general policy opinion polls. Anyone have good resources or examples I should reference?

Time to change my summer work to do list to my fall work to do list.

The list is the same, but I’ve replaced summer with fall

I had the same thought and didn’t take full advantage of my sabbatical. I fully regret that decision now.

You’ll need to find other ways to place structure into your daily routine, but it’s worth the opportunity to try.

Does anyone have an example of an accepted JSM invited session proposal from a previous year that they could share with me? If so, DM or email me :)

NYC-based people - I'm looking for an adjunct instructor to teach an undergraduate course *this fall* at NYU called Power and Politics of Data. There's a lot of flexibility in what the course could look like, but I'm also happy to share ideas and the job ad. DM me if you think you're interested.

40. Probably the most valuable service provided by methodologists is wading through dense stats papers, and figuring out what's actually useful for applied social scientists.
