This and Ultima 8 Pagan were a big part of my childhood. I watched my older brother go through those games... and I feel like they must've played a part in shaping modern games.

The cover art, or lack thereof, for Ultima VII: the Black Gate. It's just the game's name and the Origin logo on an otherwise black, featureless box.

Ultima VII: the Black Gate was the next mainline entry for the series and came out only a month after Ultima Underworld. It became the first in the story arc known as the Age of Armageddon - a prophetic name in more ways than one, as we'll see.

Over the past three months, I learned everything I could about Final Fantasy – from its rich history to its massive cultural impact and the many in-jokes shared among its fans.

In time, I understood why it has captured the hearts of players everywhere.
