Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin (1910–1994) was a British chemist renowned for pioneering the use of X-ray crystallography to determine the structure of several complex biomolecules. This groundbreaking work not only enabled the mass production of these substances but also established crystallography as an indispensable scientific tool. After earning her Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1937, Hodgkin determined the structure of penicillin in 1945, followed by vitamin B12 in 1956. The latter achievement earned her the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, making her the third woman in history to win the prize. She then spent over 35 years determining the structure of insulin, a process that had a lasting impact on improving treatments for diabetes. Hodgkin also received numerous other honors, including the Order of Merit, becoming the first British woman to receive it after Florence Nightingale, and having her image appear on postage stamps in the U.K.
