When I climbed the Matterhorn in the early 90's, there were iron stanchions fitted for use as running belays in the steep icefield on the shoulder below the summit. Goodness only knows what it's like to climb nowadays.

I’ll share this Nick as I’d also be very interested to know. There were problems on the Lion Ridge a few years ago, which could have been the stanchions destabilising. Must have been great climbing it in the 90s.

I agree Nick. There are still sudden snow flurries in the Spring and Summer, but the glacial parts may almost be gone just below the summit
