Another art piece for 2024! Stretching my art muscles and made this piece a bit of a practice project to get back into the swing of things.
What better subject to do this with than the lively & curious Rufous-naped Wren & its many subspecies?

In an attempt to be more active here, my first finished art piece of 2024!
This has been a piece that Iβve been thinking about for many years, and will be a part of a larger set of works hopefully in the near future. Very βcoming full-circleβ piece for me π€
When traveling, I often have the urge to draw but donβt have the materials on me. So, I resort to drawing with a finger on my iPhone π
Some comparisons of Kentish and Snowy Plover plumages from the other day when art motivation struck!

Not quite a return to the Amazon, but a wonderful early Christmas gift today was finding out that I am returning to Brazil in a few months! Atlantic forest here I come!
(Photo from my last time in Brazil)
A photo of the sky with many little specks that are warblers, all of which are headed to the right side of the image as they migrate south.
A scene from the great mega-flight of warblers earlier this month in Chicago! These are probably all Yellow-rumped Warblers.
20.10.2023 17:14 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Hi Sarah! I know this building has been monitored for 40+ years, so management is very much aware (but doesnβt do anything afaik). It was certainly a horrific aligning of events for this to happen.
06.10.2023 19:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There are people who monitor this building regularly. We can also use condition of the deceased birds to tell how old they are. They all did indeed come from one single night/morning!
06.10.2023 19:11 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0One building. One morning. Almost 1,000 dead birds.
I canβt even imagine what the numbers are across the entire city of Chicago.
Please consider turning lights off in your home and offices over night as our feathered friends make their journey south!

Hey yβall, Iβm Marky!
First year PhD student at the Univ. of Chicago, where I am pursuing my dreams to study birds! (Molec. bio, evo devo, perception)
I also LOVE museum work, with current position at the Field Museum, but past work with MLZ & LSUMNS.
(I post abt birds, art, and more!)
Iβve been birding since I was 4, and that passion has taken me to many places full of amazing people.
From my first bird jobs, being a part of an all-woman team to Brazil, & to even working in the Moore Lab of Zoologyβ¦I am so grateful!
I have so much more to say, but thatβs a good start!
Hi Bluesky!
I am an NSF GRF PhD student at the University of Chicago (starting my first year π±).
I am hoping to continue the pursuit of some of my lifelong scientific interests in birds, such as avian perception, museum ornithology, speciation, scientific illustration, & more!
In the spirit of fall migration & having not shared art in a long time, here is a lovely Magnolia Warbler sporting its fall plumage!
12.09.2023 11:32 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Day 2: Already loving Chicago!
Have met up with some LA friends - including seeing Kelsey rock it out on stage (check out Reckling!) - moved in & apartment bird list has begun, and of course enjoying the food and nice weather.
Me in a drift car! Drifting, racing, building cars is my sorta-secret hobby outside of biology-related things
27.08.2023 14:25 β π 11 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0It is absolutely a fluffy murrelet Friday.
I can only dream of having the courage these feathery ping-pong balls have just casually floating miles offshore on the ocean.
I am SO excited to share the latest out of the Moore Lab!
Interested in the use of several data-types (specimens, genomic, recordings, etc) and a story of back-colonization leading to splits? π Then check out our work! (& my art is included!)

My first post has got to be about birds, obviously.
Some recent birdies from a pelagic in LA waters, which was a very fitting goodbye!
