Our research indicates that public opinion in Germany and Switzerland is split over whether energy security and the transition to renewable energy are conflicting or complementary objectives.

Analyse zur Abstimmung: Zuwanderung war beim Autobahn-Nein nicht entscheidend Eine Mehrheit stimmte im Herbst gegen den Ausbau der Nationalstrassen. In einer Vox-Studie wurde nach den Gründen gefragt.

Autobahnabstimmung: Die grosse Mehrheit der Nein-Stimmenden (73%) gab Umweltbedenken als Hauptgrund an: gegen Zunahme des Autoverkehrs, für stärkeren ÖV und mehr Umwelt- und Klimaschutz.

Gerade mal 0.06%(!) - 2 von 3113 Befragten - nannten Migration als Motiv.

BUT: Trade-offs Exist

Political allegiance shapes attitudes via in- and out-party cues. Broad coalitions may alienate left-wing voters who see compromises as weakening environmental goals.

Thus, growing polarization on climate action is a major obstacle to achieving a greener future.

Finding 1: One-shot Information Alone Does Not Work

Providing information about how green taxes work did not significantly change effectiveness beliefs or policy support. However, effectiveness beliefs are closely tied to policy support and skepticism about effectiveness remains a major barrier.

I have previously argued (link.springer.com/article/10.1...) that people do not like green taxes because many do not believe in their effectiveness. In our new study, we show that these beliefs are deeply ingrained and cannot be easily changed, e.g. by information.
