Just looking to expand my tech knowledge. DevOps, Linux, Ansible, IaC, python, aws, etc.
No worries. We can't keep up with ALL the things! You're quite welcome
21.11.2025 23:01 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0@laz000.bsky.social you're likely already aware, but in case you're not...
21.11.2025 22:48 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yes you can boot to a live usb. If you're not set on a particular distro, you can launch quite a few here:

Learned something new. Had never heard of wolfi, chiseled, or flatcar. Obviously have played with alpine. I know what I'm playing with tomorrow!
20.11.2025 03:54 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I had the same curiosity recently

Just different variations of Linux. Linux is technically just the kernel. Different distros have different package managers (think app store). At a high level most work pretty similar with varying nuances. I'd probably pick something user friendly. Bazzite is immutable, and mint is great also
16.11.2025 21:43 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Distro examples would be Mint, Fedora, cachyOS, Arch, Debian, Ubuntu etc. You might just spin up some VMs on this site and try to get a feel for what you're looking for.

Depending on what distro you choose, it's not too bad to install from scratch. There's plenty of documentation out there and YouTube videos
16.11.2025 21:21 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Amazon has some used thinkpads too. Not sure how much storage you need, but there's options.

Look at Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, and ebay. Keep looking and you'll eventually come across a good deal. Especially with win10 hitting EOL
16.11.2025 20:04 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Ok, sorry to hear that. It's an option many people overlook, so thought I'd throw it out there
16.11.2025 19:59 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yeah, the department that takes care of PCs. Can go by many names, but desktop department should be generic enough to serve as a "catch all" for the various names. Storage is getting cheaper, so you can either get a device with a large HDD, upgrade it, or add external storage performance depending
16.11.2025 19:58 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Good is quite subjective. What will you be using this for? And if you work somewhere large enough with a desktop department, ask if they have anything EOL or not windows 11 compliant that you can have for free. Most places have a 3 year hardware life cycle.
16.11.2025 19:43 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0Do I need this? Absolutely not. Am I going to buy it? Also no, but man do I want it lol. If I still had pre-kids disposable income i'd be buying this lol.
16.11.2025 14:52 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0This is also my best recommendation ^^
16.11.2025 13:48 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Still loving my stuff from @thewitsendstore.bsky.social

Hell yeah!
15.11.2025 03:34 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Maybe try the recursive flag?
chown [[-R|--recursive]] [user] [path/to/directory]
I really hope so! But this is hopefully the catalyst!!!
14.11.2025 21:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Glad you finally asked
14.11.2025 03:24 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0What distro? And what's the chown command you're running?
14.11.2025 03:20 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I'd be surprised if it wasn't. And uptime of 5+ years with no kernel patches
14.11.2025 03:13 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Should have been 1st question
14.11.2025 02:42 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0And now steam cube is generating quite a buzz...
14.11.2025 02:35 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0If I'm actually doing something from a live USB, i tend to use Knoppix which is Debian based. Really optimized to run live.
14.11.2025 02:31 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Pretty sure you're aware, but a lot of new Linux people as of late. So this is for them. But he wrote Git developing the Linux kernel. Not to be confused with the M$ owned Github, but actually git.
13.11.2025 23:39 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yeah. I was thinking about a 9. But they're still somewhat costly.
13.11.2025 18:27 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I bought an old 6a to demo grapheneOS. Going to flash it back and give it to my daughter. Going to get a 7 or 8 for me to switch to.
