[ID: Three book covers are placed in a single row. The first book on the left shows a thick dark blue-gray frame containing a rectangular B&W photograph of a white man looking away from us while showing his left shoulder blade with a lyre tattoo there. The title and author’s name are in white and in the upper right corner of the photograph: ARKANSAS LUGGAGE | Ed Madden. The second book in the middle shows a thick terra-cotta frame containing a color photograph of a desolate rural landscape with a row of shrubby trees far in the distance, and with the colors of wheat and brown closer to us. The title in dark brown is centered at the top of the photograph: THE GREAT OCEAN OF THE PLAINS. The author’s name in white is centered at the bottom of the photograph: David Cummer. The third book on the right shows a thick dull pastel pink frame containing a color photograph of a scruffy-looking barefooted male dancer wearing a loose shirt and jeans as he angles his arms straight up and out while bending his body sideways in an arc against a gray background. The title and author’s name are in white: OTHER DANCES | David Rutiezer. Below the three book covers are the Squares & Rebels logo (a solid red square tilted atop a row of vertical black stripes) on the left with the text CHAPS POETRY SERIES | an imprint of SQUARES & REBELS, and the text on the right in both red and black: THE SECOND SLATE | SPRING 2025.]

And I obviously don't have a problem with showing ASL gloss in print; just a different way to experience (at least for non-signers) the syntax/grammar of ASL itself. ASL is so complex that it always feels inadequate on the page. Which is often true when translating between two disparate languages.

22.01.2025 03:53 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I've played with displaying ASL dialogue in some of my fiction involving Deaf characters. ANIMALS OUT-THERE W-I-L-D is just a sustained effort to play with ASL gloss, ASL poetry forms, and English written poetry. It's a polyglot fusion!!!
