I watched season 1, but while I enjoyed it I haven't gotten back to it yet. That's on my watchlist though.

I don't know if any of this answers the question, but I enjoy it all so much. It's been a comfort food since I was a kid watching Starblazers.

I know I list One Piece above, but that is an INVESTMENT. I hope one day it pays off and I'm only in the 800's, but few anime can touch the scope of that thing.

I'm also a big fan of feature length anime, but I probably haven't watched enough to comment beyond saying Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and anything by Hayao Miyazaki.

There are way more, this is more of a comfort food list for me.

I will say if I have to suggest one it is really hard to beat FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's a complete story with great character development, art, and story.

So...I personally skew towards fantasy/sci-fi/adventure which tends to be more violent (not always):
