Erstmals seit Mitte der 1960-er Jahre - also seit 60 Jahren - nimmt der Holzvorrat im Wald leicht ab. Damit hat der Wald - trotz nach wie vor leicht wachsender Waldfläche - in der letzten Periode wohl netto keinen Kohlenstoff mehr aus der Atmosphäre aufgenommen.
