🔥 Just published! 🔥
Our new manuscript on global #wildfires look beyond burned areas and ask:
What drives the #economic damages of wildfires — now & in the future?
We find that socioeconomic vulnerability, not just #climate, is key.

Heat kills, more than we think and we can see. Heat intensified by climate change kills even more. For the 1st time, we conducted a rapid impact attribution study looking at the additional deaths that occurred due to climate change across 12 cities in Europe, in close to real-time: shorturl.at/mv6ms

bar chart showing deaths associate with extreme heat with and without climate change in 12 European cities
About 1500 of the approx. 2300 people that will have lost their lives across 12 European cities last week would still live, if it wasn't for our burning of oil, coal and gas. If we care about the right to life, we need to stop burning fossil fuels. www.imperial.ac.uk/grantham/pub...

/end

Cumulative CO₂ emissions
Running sum of CO₂ emissions produced from fossil fuels and industry since the first year of recording, measured in tonnes. Land-use change is not included.

Foreword — Global Warming of 1.5 ºC

*** Faktencheck***

Heatwaves may cut GDP by 0.5 pct points in Europe, Allianz says
Allianz Research compared a day with temperatures above 32 degrees Celsius to half a day of strikes.
Report from Allianz Research shows a day with temperatures above 32 degrees Celsius in 2025 has a comparable effect on GDP as half a day of strikes.
Recent heatwaves across Europe could slow economic growth in Europe by half a percentage point.

Scientific advice for the determination of an EU-wide 2040 climate target and a greenhouse gas budget for 2030–2050

Causal pathway from AMOC to Southern Amazon rainforest indicates stabilising interaction between two climate tipping elements - IOPscience
Causal pathway from AMOC to Southern Amazon rainforest indicates stabilising interaction between two climate tipping elements, Högner, Annika, Di Capua, Giorgia, Donges, Jonathan F, Donner, Reik V, Feulner, Georg, Wunderling, Nico
New study out, in which we detect a causal link in reanalysis+observational data from an AMOC SST index to the Southern Amazon rainforest: dry season precipitation increases when the AMOC weakens.

The EU is discussing its 2040 target that needs to sketch a credible path towards achieving its mid-century "climate neutrality" target (net zero greenhouse gas emissions).
Lots of interests pull in all directions, but our scientific advice from the independent @esabcc.bsky.social is clear

Countries cleaning up more climate pollution than they are producing?
That is the idea behind achieving net-negative emissions.
Though an ambition for the far future, its pursuit starts with deep emissions cuts over the next decade.
