Overshoot |

✨ The reflections sent a powerful message: overshoot is not just a scientific scenario, it is a lived reality that compounds risks, deepens inequities, & raises questions of justice. Responding requires courage, collaboration, & commitment across all levels of society.

Sorry, but disagree with @hausfath.bsky.social here. You open Pandora's box, you ain't closing it again. We've already seen with Paris that well intentioned international agreements do not translate into physical reality and SRM governance is a much harder problem. Zero is the only safe level. /1

Out now: our new study shows that climate change caused nearly 1,700 heat-related deaths in Zürich over 50 years.

We assessed the effects of changing vulnerability to heat, heat-mortality within and outside of heatwaves, and the contribution of individual companies' emissions to heat deaths.

Just to pick out one point: A metric should act like a 'currency' in which a tonne is a tonne. GWP* depends on time and emitting source. Even the sign. This is not a basis for decision making. GWP* us a good tool for global applications as a simple model. But that's about it.

Interesting thread. Agree with many points by @hannahdaly.ie.
Ultimately, the discussion points to what the purpose of a metric is. Leaving a paper here by @meinshausen.bsky.social and Zeb Nicholls. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1... They argue GWP* is a model, not a metric. And I agree.
