A good reminder that Community Connections was killed by Scott Gillingham and Evan Duncan not for failing, but for succeeding at something they didn’t want — making Millennium Library more welcoming to, and a better service for, poor and marginalized Winnipeggers. They *want* to push people away.

In a june council meeting, city staff told the standing policy committee on community services there was "no partnership" between Millennium Library and DCSP.

And thats if those appointment-based crisis workers even functionally exist!

He pointed to existing safety investments, including an enhanced security system and metal detector, community crisis workers available by appointment and the Downtown Community Safety Partnership working in the former Community Connections space.

If Gillingham had any compassion for this man, or for the staff and patrons traumatized by his death, it’s hard to see evidence in his blame-shifting. None of these things address the concerns raised, or would help anyone in crisis. “Community crisis workers available by appointment” is a sick joke.

Someone at @winnipegfreepress.com was just looking for an angle to make Millennium seem dangerous in a particular kind of way, when we keep seeing evidence that the most significant dangers there are to marginalized people, and due to low staffing and removal of community supports

This is not the first time the Millennium Library has closed following a police incident. The building was also shuttered on Dec. 11, 2022, after 28-year-old Tyree Cayer was stabbed to death on the main floor. Aside from pickups and returns, other library services didn't resume until Jan. 23, 2023, with metal detectors and extra security staff in place. Hey @winnipegfreepress.com why is this in your stub about an apparent suicide at Millennium, when the more relevant fact to mention is that others have attempted and succeeded at jumping from the same place before, and the city has refused staff demands to address it?

You will not see a more succinct or accurate summation of the approach to infrastructure under this mayor and council

This is why Mayor Gillingham and Councillor Lukes are slow-rolling the Wellington bike lanes — they don’t want us to ride.

Winnipeg mayor Scott Gillingham said on CBC Radio that his wish for downtown is that someone living in the suburbs (not downtown) should feel safe if their kid has a late shift at a downtown business. What about all the people that live downtown? Does their safety and quality of life matter?
