FWIW the idea that fiction can be written in transparent style to me is akin to the idea it’s possible for fiction to be apolitical. In other words, no it can’t. No style is style, and also it’s going to sound dated in a few years, just like all the once contemporary styles of the past we now affect

Maybe an answer for some of the folks on here who've been lamenting the tyranny of "transparent style" in speculative genre: this piece by EC Dorgan uses pacing and a deceptively flat affect to confer intense claustrophobia on the vastness of the northern Great Plains
