This journal issue is in memory of György Kara, a brilliant Mongolist who I studied with at IU. He passed away before I defended my dissertation. But he taught me so much about Mongolia and gave wonderful feedback on my research. So at least a fraction of his knowledge lives on.

This paper came in third for the Next Generation American Mongolists Research Paper Prize Competition sponsored by the Mongolian government.

This is a key part of understanding socialist Mongolia, Mongolian animal history, and a major corrective to ahistorical scholarship on Mongolian animals.

Orkhon breed sheep

Veterinarians helped livestock health and spread state power. Apparently a controversial opinion, but vaccines that prevented diseases were good, and saved lots livestock lives! And new sheep breed, especially the Orkhon sheep, were a successful melding of modern vet science and Mongolian herding.

In it, I argue while it did not receive all promised funding, vet science was the most successful aspect of the socialist livestock policies. Unlike what some scholars claim, vet science was not a foreign imposition. It was Mongolian led and made a strong case for socialist modernity.

It is now October, which means it is medieval pig feeding in woodlands time!

I had the chance to visit the Basilica of St Denis in Paris today, which shows pig feeding in a stone carving on the jamb of the right portal of the west façade.
