I was recently discussing doing this on ATproto. 3rd party sellers could create a new record in your repo (using their signature) as a sort of proof-of-sale for an individual game. With an open lexicon you could even show off your collection elsewhere.

Of course it can, but they’ll be susceptible to the same payment processors regardless of where they’re located. Collective Shout is based in Australia and is already pressuring the payment processors to come down on companies globally.

Except that this whole thing was started by a group of individuals. Collective Shout said it only took ~1000 calls to make this happen. If we as individuals call en masse demanding a reversal, it’s a lot more likely to happen.

To be clear, I don’t mean be careful about what you say. I mean be careful pointing people at the wrong target. 😉

Let’s be careful here. It’s not like it hurts to tell Itch how you feel, but it’s a lot more important that we speak up to the payment processors. Even if Itch decided to carry on, they’d be absolutely hamstrung by not being able to process payments via Visa and Mastercard.

Hey, I’d gladly go back to the days of shipping money orders to get my games. 🤣

I’ve been sent screenshots that indicate it’s all real, but I haven’t independently verified anything. That’s why I said it’s being reported, and not that it’s definitely happening. I get the confusion, tho. Sorry I wasn’t more clear.

For further reading on the issue and the trouble "Collective Shout" is causing across the industry, check out these 2 excellent articles from @acvalens.net.

For everybody else: keep raising awareness. Tell anybody that will listen about these hateful organizations and how their censorship and LGBT erasure is directly impacting real people.

If you're in the US, UK, or Australia, check out this excellent post from @icalasari.illusoria.ca which rounds up the numbers you can call to express your concerns directly to these companies.

Mastercard: Sex Work is Work. End Your Unjust Policy. Mastercard's new policy unfairly targets the adult content industry, making sex workers more vulnerable, especially Black trans women. It must be stopped.

SO, what should YOU do? Consider supporting the ACLU's campaign against Mastercard's unjust policies that impact this sort of issue.

As far as I know, we don't yet have details on what Itch.io received from the payment processors. It may have included a gag to prevent them speaking further about the situation. I'm not saying that Itch is in the clear, just that we don't yet have all the information.

In response to the threat, Itch.io started the process of cleansing their site, leaving many creators in the lurch.

Keep in mind that Itch.io is not entirely to blame. I'm not here to defend ANY companies, but I can sympathize with the terror of facing litigation from Goliath.

Side note: the group is further lobbying PayPal, Paysafe, Discover, JCB, and other payment processors. They're attempting to leverage the same power to erase and censor NSFW and LGBT content across the internet, not just video games.

The group has claimed credit for the recent changes to Steam's payment processor policies which target adult games, and now they've successfully lobbied Visa and Mastercard to stop processing payments for Itch.io if NSFW and LGBT content isn't removed from their platform.

Where does the blame lie? The foremost agitator is an organization known as "Collective Shout." They're an anti-porn TERF group lobbying to remove games from the internet if they violate the "traditional" values.

Whether you personally enjoy these games or not is irrelevant. They deserve to be made by those who enjoy making them, and they deserve a platform where they can find an audience. Itch.io has been that platform, and it was decimated overnight.

Why is this important? Itch.io has been a bastion for "non-traditional" games for years now. Porn, furry, kink, queer... as long as they're not harmful, pretty much anything has been allowed.

If you're unaware of what's happening, Itch.io has deindexed NSFW and LGBT+ content from their website. It's being reported that they're deleting some projects, shadowbanning others, and withholding payouts from NSFW and LGBT creators. See the linked article for their explanation of the situation.
