We know uncertainty remains. Access will be affected, but microtunnelling offers the best chance to keep businesses open while critical work continues. Safety measures, including temporary flood berms, are also in place for residents.

Nearby businesses, including Angel’s Café, were notified early. The City’s Community & Business Relations team continues to provide regular updates to both businesses and residents.

Microtunnelling will be used for Stage A. While some surface work is unavoidable, it will be limited to targeted access points rather than the full length of the corridor.

We’re relieved the City chose microtunnelling instead. This method minimizes surface disruption and avoids the severe business impacts that open‑trench construction would have caused.

Two construction approaches were reviewed. “Cut and cover” would have required long open trenches and caused major impacts to Montgomery businesses—an outcome our office pushed hard to avoid.

The City is moving ahead with an accelerated plan to build a new Bearspaw Feeder Main alongside the failed pipe, while also repairing the original line to maintain future redundancy.

The Dec 30 pipe rupture was a wake‑up call for Calgary. It exposed vulnerabilities in our water system and the need for urgent action to protect our city’s water supply.
