On the contrary, Anime Factory's The Colors Within subtitles are just like FUNimation NOW: no outline, tiny, and signs+dialogue are cobbled together in one area of the screen. Shameful.

So while we have seen some shows on Crunchyroll get updated with better subtitles, I would like to remind everyone that many shows haven't. I also reached out to some insiders, and so far there has been no clear internal communication about changing course back to comprehensive typesetting either.

It is even aligned to what the rest of the streaming industry is doing!

if CR wants to operate like Netflix, it's the way to go. Taking shortcuts (and using OOONA, which Netflix does NOT use internally, only contractors!) will lead them nowhere.

I don't necessarily disagree here, but financial reasons may impose restrictions, and the adaptive sub format delivery system addresses most concerns. If I were caught in that vice (corporate v.s. customers' wants) that would be what I'd propose and defend.

30.10.2025 14:29 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

ngl I found that idea horrible and impractical.

CR does not want anyone to steal their script, so it's fair to protect it somehow, hardsub or not. But then image subtitles could be used too. Their design philosophy is to be as cheap as possible to decode for extremely computationally weak devices (e.g. TV set top box)

I mean sure you can use MPEG-DASH to achieve seamless branching on streaming, but it's a high effort task and has its share of complexities.

They can then still attract more subscribers by bragging how their subtitles are infinitely better than the competition for the same show.

their take does not even make sense if you factor in captialism

One input file (ASS) gets converted to a few formats (VTT, TTML, ...). Proper internal guidelines for ASS Style usage allow to easily strip typesetting in the automated conversion.

The client is served the right sub file based on its capabilities. They will save millions in storage & efficiency.

Daiz' article is great, albeit not so accessible to someone uneducated about the extensive use of on-screen text in anime.

I do strongly disagree with the hardsub take. There are enough code monkeys and subtitling formats to have a CDN that distributes subtitles based on the client capabilities.

Crunchyroll is destroying its subtitles for no good reason

A ton of research and effort went into this one. This is the article to read to get to the bottom of Crunchyroll's subtitle changes!

Alright it's only the latest movies but it is still negative. ending up with only home video rights is not something a distributor wants nowadays

damn, typesetting enshitification is not just crunchyroll but also real life now

Dynit loosing the rights to Demon Slayer was not on my bingo card. I guess other European distributors are also affected.

Sony must be cooking something up.

Anime Factory release of Cowboy Bebop has soft-sub overlays for next episode previews. It's quite low effort in terms of styling, but still something.

So I'm trying to replace some old screenshots of typesetting on Crunchyroll with fresh ones, only to find out that the back catalog entries I'm looking for have had their subtitles updated to the new no-typesetting style. So much for Crunchyroll "fixing" the issue, they're blowing full steam ahead

Lucca Comics Dynit panel is in 1 week. Let's see if they have managed to level off that downspiraling trend of the last 3 years. Last year panel let down everyone and gave a gloomy outlook for the company.

Netflix has much more to gain (and can afford) to work on codec development, bandwidth gains and data analysis than subtitles.

CR cannot afford the bigger things, which everyone understand and no one blames them for that! They should at least focus on the small ones.

10.10.2025 18:24 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Netflix does not give a damn about subs, plain simple. They have had one of the worst text outline for years, no accessbility, no nothing. All competitors did much better, even smaller ones like HIDIVE.
In many non-english Netflix instances, programs are plagued with MTL subs. They don't care.

10.10.2025 18:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Netflix is NOT using OOONA. They are merely recommending it to third parties as a mean to produce standardized TTML files that they (Netflix) will ingest and convert to other formats!!

10.10.2025 18:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

it's merely about using existing technologies (!!) with some plumbing to automate it all. It's really not that hard nor expensive.

10.10.2025 15:02 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Netflix is doing extensive research on AV encoding, standardization, AI, data analysis, mining, etc.

No one is holding CR to Netflix R&D standard. Customers just want CR to at least care about the very core of their business: proper presentation of audio, video, and subtitles.

10.10.2025 14:58 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

given that Netflix has never invested much if at all in the subtitle department, there's absolutely nothing stopping CR from doing the same or better... unless they're dealing with idiotic management.

And surprise! CR did not realize that skipping on this small investment lead to high long term costs, far exceeding what was needed to pay a few engineers to do the job once for all.

You should not accept enshitification, ever.

He said CR new tech was shittier than image subs, not that he wanted image subs.

libass can be built on any platform (C lib), there are ASS renderers in javascript, WebASM, iOS, Android. SRT fallback for the nokia phone is always possible.

Going for hardsubs was just due to a lack of investment.
