Mary Smith's Longhorn steer armchair, 1894-1904, Christopher Smith Ranchers in Colorado converted the state's rich grasslands into gold. As beef became big business, Denver became a hub for the livestock industry. Brothers Christopher and John Thomas Smith opened the first meat packing plant in Denver in 1894, presumably providing Christopher with the materials he used to make this chair as a Christmas present for his sister-in-law Mary. The horns on the chair are typical of the Longhorn breed that flourished on the plains of eastern Colorado.
