Unironically the best mugen game ever made. Basically a solo dev project afaik, has a fully featured story mode, and combo trials. Its also the best One Piece Fighting game by several country miles. Go play it now.

Also to be clear I'm not throwing shade at HF/HF2, its a good example of how simplicity can be really cool.

I may be wrong, but I honestly just don't see there being a casual audience for indie FGs outside people that already play FGs. If you want to simplify things to make it a better game, that's great. But imo doing it to attract a casual audience isn't worth potentially making a worse game.

Turns out Eighting can make good fighting games.
