A Single Black Father facing eviction is asking for help. He had to change his hours to take care of his daughter, it’s been hard trying to keep up with rent and he’s fallen behind. If we each give $1 he’ll reach his goal. We’ve helped 167 people so far, let’s keep going.

Republicans who blather about opposing censorship, have no problem banning books, closing libraries or arresting people who dare to say the wrong thing about sainted bigot, Charlie Kirk.

My fucking state. Ugh.

To borrow a statement from Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince, "I hope he puts up so much litigation that even the Sheriff's grandchildren would be footing the bill."

The two Charlie Kirk acolytes who "debated" black TSU students did way more to incite violence than this guy.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision on Trans Healthcare Is Rippling Through State Courts A North Dakota case upholding a ban on gender-affirming care for trans kids should trouble people who care about the dignity of trans people.

A North Dakota case upholding a ban on gender-affirming care for kids highlights the dangers of assuming trans identity is inherently medical, writes @nyulaw.bsky.social student Morgan Munroe for @statecourtreport.org.

Check out her piece for an important perspective that doesn't get much airtime.

8. By the time Dawn of the Dead released in the late 1970s and zombies went "viral" (pun intended) they started to become the modern phenomenon they are today.

But both vampires and zombies are steeped slavery lore and the presence of Black/African people in the West

George Romero's Night of the Living Dead 1968. Starring a Black protagonist when very few movies had a Black leading character

George Romero's Night of the Living Dead 1968. Starring a Black protagonist when very few movies had a Black leading character

7. So the zombie evolves as:

1. Black victim of slavery
2. White victim of black magic

until George Romero reinvented the zombie in 1968 to the mindless, violent, consuming monster, in "Night of the Living Dead."

It became a critique of the Vietnam & violent Civil rights era led by a Black man

1932 movie "White Zombie"

1932 movie "White Zombie"

6. But it was the 1932 movie "The White Zombie" that made the zombie a cultural sensation.

A white woman moves to Haiti to marry her plantation owner fiancé. But he was a jealous man. So he asks a Vodou priest to turn her into a zombie so he could control her

Notice "white" zombie.

1929 book, The Magic Island by William Seabrook

4. But what really cemented it was a 1929 book called "The Magic Island" by William Seabrook that features a white adventurer chronicling his travels on the Haitian island.

He writes of black magic, vodou ceremonies, and "zombie making." Corpses taken from the grave and made to work the fields

It doesnt stop there. Did you know "zombies" are an African creation?

Zombie comes from the Haitian creole "zanbi," which itself comes from the Kikongo word "nzambi" that translates to "spirit of a dead person.'

It embodied the spirit of haitian slavery. Body is alive, the soul is not

"The Black Vampyre; Legend of St. Domingo" by Uriah Derick D'Arcy written in 1819.

The story of an enslaved man in St Domingo (modern day Haiti) who was thrown overboard as his enslaver attempted to kill him.

He not only survives, he lives forever, and marries one of his enslaver's descendants.

Reminds me of "Sinners" in a way

Wanna hear a scary story?

The first American vampire was Black.

Seriously.

78 years before Dracula appeared in American literature, there was "The Black Vampyre" by Uriah D'Arcy.

It was written in 1819 as an antislavery critique and the effect the Haitian Revolution had on the States
