There’s a district within The Hague in Holland which is famously difficult for foreigners to pronounce. It is called Scheveningen. It was used as a test word during the Second World War in order to detect German agents who were trying to pass as Dutch.

There were two Roosevelts. Theodore Roosevelt served two terms. FDR died during his fourth term. Each of them was one President. Only 45 men have been President of the USA.

Actually it has only had 45. Grover Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms, and Trump is in his second (non-consecutive) term now.

Have you ever tried the “Scheveningen” test? I spent a boozy afternoon in The Hague with a Dutch colleague trying to pronounce the name (a district of the town), and he kept saying "No, it sounds like this" and then saying exactly what I thought I’d just said. 😉

Have I misunderstood trade deficits?

If I often buy lots of beer from a bar, but the owner never buys anything from me, then I am in a trade deficit situation vis-à-vis the bar.

Does that mean the bar owner is mean and I should impose a reciprocal tariff on his beer? Just asking for a President!
