Depending on your perspective on ethical click-bait, you might want to change the title to "Why The NI Insolvency Is Great News (A Love Letter To Reaktor)" ๐
Seeing lots of doom & gloom but @timexile.com has a very interesting and informed perspective on the @nativeinstruments.bsky.social situation...

I may have to revise this opinion
Infographic showing the "chessboard illusion" - a chessboard with a shadow cast across part of the image. Two squares are labelled - a white one in the shadow has the same colour intensity as a black one outside the shadow. However they appear to be quite different shades because our brains understand the context of the shadowed area. The text reads: Expectation - Matched LUFS will sound the same perceived loudness (A LUFS = B LUFS) vs. Reality - LUFS targets aren't enough (LUFS work, but perception is complicated)
The Equal LUFS Illusion
Equal LUFS means it'll sound the same loudness, right ?
Often yes, but it's not *always* that simple...

I mastered this song for Patrick De Caumette back in 2023 - so cool to see it used as the soundtrack for an award-winning video !

30.11.2025 12:15 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Loving everything about thisโฆ
30.11.2025 00:12 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yeah people complain about edge cases in music too, but Iโm not sure a significant improvement is possible without (eg) genre detection
16.11.2025 11:00 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I definitely think itโs better than nothing, but yes - Iโve been disappointed by the lack of impact the normalisation has had - although I do think weโve pulled back from the worst of it
16.11.2025 00:59 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Fair comments. I donโt find momentary helpful either - short-term is the most useful for music for me
16.11.2025 00:57 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I get that, but itโs not a suggested standard, just their compromise level between playback volume and flexibility for normalisation.
What I find is that everyone still maxes everything out rather than taking the opportunity to master things at whatever level works best for the music ๐
Agreed ! But itโs enabled by default and most music fans donโt change that. Even less on Spotify and nobody at all on YouTube.
Thatโs the ironic thing, most people in music production are listening to something different than the majority of music fans
Fair enough - I donโt advocate aiming at -14 (or any other integrated number) but I also donโt find high LUFS a good solution - itโs the increase in density that causes the change in sound, but I think there are more effective strategies to achieve that
15.11.2025 19:53 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Well, I havenโt dug in that deeply but Iโm pretty sure they used a shelf because most signals just donโt have content up there.
Either way I totally get that it isnโt perfect, but itโs pretty good given the fairly crude model.
Agreed but the standard actually works pretty well for music as well, and is widely used. But thereโs a lot of confusion about how it works and the best way to implement it
15.11.2025 14:39 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Ugh ๐
Theyโre taking down sides and rear in a surround stream ? Or do you just mean in a stereo downmix ?
I didnโt understand this to begin with but youโre normalising to -6 dBTP, is that right ? Do you not have to hit an integrated LUFS value these days ?
15.11.2025 14:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0(Spotify use a limiter to lift songs below -11 LUFS if a subscriber chooses the โLoudโ option in the preferences, but thatโs a really small proportion of users afaict)
