Ah Iโ€™m a huge fan of minimum viable everything ๐Ÿ˜› Hard to argue with that level of bang-for-your buck !

Iโ€™m a lapsed trombone player, and always felt a bit sad that it wasnโ€™t a veryโ€ฆ cool instrument.

I may have to revise this opinion

Infographic showing the "chessboard illusion" - a chessboard with a shadow cast across part of the image. Two squares are labelled - a white one in the shadow has the same colour intensity as a black one outside the shadow. However they appear to be quite different shades because our brains understand the context of the shadowed area. The text reads: Expectation - Matched LUFS will sound the same perceived loudness (A LUFS = B LUFS) vs. Reality - LUFS targets aren't enough (LUFS work, but perception is complicated)

The Equal LUFS Illusion

Equal LUFS means it'll sound the same loudness, right ?

Often yes, but it's not *always* that simple...

Yeah people complain about edge cases in music too, but Iโ€™m not sure a significant improvement is possible without (eg) genre detection

16.11.2025 11:00 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I definitely think itโ€™s better than nothing, but yes - Iโ€™ve been disappointed by the lack of impact the normalisation has had - although I do think weโ€™ve pulled back from the worst of it

16.11.2025 00:59 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Fair comments. I donโ€™t find momentary helpful either - short-term is the most useful for music for me

16.11.2025 00:57 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I get that, but itโ€™s not a suggested standard, just their compromise level between playback volume and flexibility for normalisation.

What I find is that everyone still maxes everything out rather than taking the opportunity to master things at whatever level works best for the music ๐Ÿ˜•

15.11.2025 22:21 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Agreed ! But itโ€™s enabled by default and most music fans donโ€™t change that. Even less on Spotify and nobody at all on YouTube.

Thatโ€™s the ironic thing, most people in music production are listening to something different than the majority of music fans

15.11.2025 20:17 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Fair enough - I donโ€™t advocate aiming at -14 (or any other integrated number) but I also donโ€™t find high LUFS a good solution - itโ€™s the increase in density that causes the change in sound, but I think there are more effective strategies to achieve that

15.11.2025 19:53 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Well, I havenโ€™t dug in that deeply but Iโ€™m pretty sure they used a shelf because most signals just donโ€™t have content up there.

Either way I totally get that it isnโ€™t perfect, but itโ€™s pretty good given the fairly crude model.

15.11.2025 19:49 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Agreed but the standard actually works pretty well for music as well, and is widely used. But thereโ€™s a lot of confusion about how it works and the best way to implement it

15.11.2025 14:39 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Ugh ๐Ÿ˜•

Theyโ€™re taking down sides and rear in a surround stream ? Or do you just mean in a stereo downmix ?

15.11.2025 14:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I didnโ€™t understand this to begin with but youโ€™re normalising to -6 dBTP, is that right ? Do you not have to hit an integrated LUFS value these days ?

15.11.2025 14:20 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

(Spotify use a limiter to lift songs below -11 LUFS if a subscriber chooses the โ€œLoudโ€ option in the preferences, but thatโ€™s a really small proportion of users afaict)
