This California ice cream cone comes with a large warning
"The Frosty is known for its big cone."
I've driven by this place on the way to the Sierras every summer for the past 10yrs and always wondered if I should stop. Silas Valentino finally convinced me I definitely should have. Here's his story chronicling the half-century-old institution.

Major Cal donors in standoff with school over Berkeley's football team
Cal donors and fans want to #GiveRonTheKeys.
This story about the standoff between NIL board members and Cal Football in an (eventually successful) attempt to bring in Ron Rivera won an SF Press Club award last night. That was neat, but it reminded me that lots of you read it so thanks to everyone who did that. www.sfgate.com/collegesport...

Notre Dame is sad, and that is good
SFGATE columnist Drew Magary isn't here for the Fighting Irish's tears.
"Theyβre all big babies fighting over TV money, which means that I, the casual viewer, can pick any side I like here. So I pick the side that hates Notre Dame because I find Notre Dame stupid and annoying."

The little Calif. coffee shop crushing Starbucks, one latte at a time
Starbucks ruled this coffee corner until a new shop starting giving awayΒ lattes.
75ft. Thatβs all that separates Calif. coffee shop Groovy Goose from a Starbucks β which generated a cool $37B in 2025. The location would be the death sentence for any new coffee shop, but, somehow, Groovy Goose is the one holding the smoking gun.

One of the Calif. tech worldβs saddest inventions has been hemorrhaging cash
Once a sign of hustle culture, Silicon Valley's drink of choice scrambles to adapt.
In 2013, Soylent became symbolic of the Bay Areaβs rising tech scene and the brutal gentrification that followed. Within the past several years, though, the company has faced multimillion-dollar losses and a revolving door of C-suites.

The remote island near Hawaii with a dark past
The island served as a secluded place for activities too dangerous to do elsewhere.
βThe atoll, designated a bird refuge in 1926, was being used by the U.S. military for atmospheric nuclear tests, and the military failed to warn Hawaii ahead of time, angering local politicians.β
