Proof is useless unless it is proof of something that people already want to believe.

I don't know how difficult it is for U.S. physicians and nurses to get licensed in Canada, but we should be making it a whole lot easier. Right. Now.

Smart people will be looking to bail soon, and it won't have to be money that lures them over.

Allowing the government in power the ability to call an election at any time of their choosing is only one of the MAJOR flaws of our electoral system.

We need elections by fixed date OR by a majority vote on a motion from someone NOT in government.

Perhaps the purpose of life is to increase the quality of energy.

(In other words, to countervail entropy.)

This may even be a defining attribute.

"Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity."

W. B. Yeats (from The Second Coming)

The trick is to change what counts.

If we focus on and promote value systems that change society's definitions of success, then the required climate actions will be obvious, and we'll all strive to be winners in a better game.

So long as these are the rules of the game, those 'loser' actions will be resisted. It's all very well to intellectually reframe these actions as wins for humanity as a whole, but so long as we're still within the existing rules, you're still asking people and corps. to be losers where it counts.

Many actions on climate change (carbon taxes, offsets, emission caps, transport & consumption reductions, less global trade) result in outcomes that people and corporations perceive as serious losses under society's prevalent definitions of success (wealth, convenience, externalized costs, etc.).

How I explain why many people and corporations don't support climate action initiatives:

In a sense, life can be seen as a game. No one wants to be a loser. Winning and losing depends on what the rules of the game are, and how success is defined. This is #TheValueCrisis.

β€œWe must do away with the absolutely specious notion that everybody has to earn a living. It is a fact today that one in ten thousand of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest. We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery because, according to Darwinian-Malthusian theory, we must justify our right to exist.”

We're on a locomotive called Economic growth, pulling cars of Freshwater loss, N/P loading, Land conversion, Pollution, and Biodiversity loss. The engine is spewing Climate change and the tracks lead to the edge of the abyss.

And we're like: let's switch the engine to use renewable energy instead.
