Aloha artists, writers & poets! If you're a member of AWP and haven't gotten your ticket to this month's conference, I'm selling mine at the early bird rate ($205). I was excited to attend, but I opened a pop-up restaurant and can't make time to travel just yet. Please LMK if you'd like the ticket!

Anyone else jump on the #AWP2025 early bird special? Los Angeles is too close for me to pass up, and I'm excited to attend my 1st AWP conference!

Of course Jonathon Swift wrote it. The roasted children made him a bit windy, I suppose.

Currently reading Holly & love how you wove in the subplot of COVID. Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, elbow touches, hospitals w/out beds, anti-vaxxers; these little "tells" will be what teaches future generations what those dark days were like. The book is a page turner. Hope you stay healthy!

I haven't been to a conference since (yikes) 2014, so I'm out of the loop when it comes to conference protocol. I'm a freelance book editor (copy/developmental/proofreading). Any advice from fellow 2024 ACES conf. attendees re: which sessions to join? The biggest skill I lack is marketing myself!

I've been binge reading Stephen King since late last year (starting w Fairy Tale). I'd been a big King fan in my 20s but fell into the "I only read memoir" camp after college. After my divorce I decided all reading was good reading if I liked it. Now as an editor, I can't imagine snubbing any genre.

This is such an important skill. Sometimes I read through my suggestions before submitting them to a client and revise just in case I sound to cold or blunt. Sharing our writing is such a vulnerable act, and asking an editor for help is equally so. We owe compassion along with expertise.

Later by Stephen King was a fun (in a S.K. thriller kind of way), and quick page turner. It wasn't as developed as most of his novels, but entertaining if you like that genre.

Wise words! I equally love the saying that the only difference between success and failure is the audacity to try. I've decided to overflow with audacity. And if I flop fantastically, at least I won't have to wonder, "What if I'd just tried?"

Congratulations on your approaching release date! In the world of should'ves and would'ves, just remember you did the best you could with what you had, and now it's time to celebrate being a writer who crossed the finish line and is showcasing his hard work to the world! I wish you immense success!

I try to remind myself of the superpower this gives me as an editor: empathy. When my clients feel like they're "not a writer" or their book isn't worth publishing, I can guide them through it because I've so been there. Plus, if they can feel this way & still write the book, what's my excuse?

I have long loved Denise Silva aka PearMama's art. She's a SoCal Latina artist who centers on images of indigenous femininity, motherhood, and ancestral spirituality. My walls are covered with her pieces.

This is universal for editors who are also writers! I'm writing a book too and spend half the time feeling like I don't know how to use words correctly. ๐
