I am surrounded by people who are outsourcing their own thinking to ChatGPT and they are quickly and obviously becoming dependent on it for even the most banal tasks. Once again, the "figuring it out" is the important part. Yes, you can use a crane to lift weights but you will not get stronger

I always love when I get to write about physics.
Bonus shoutout to @oregandavid.bsky.social who introduced me to DFT as my undergrad thesis advisor, which means my brain lights up a little extra when I get to write about DFT now!

World-renowned Tulane physicist wins prestigious Benjamin Franklin Medal
Tulane University News and Press Releases
This was an absolute joy to write! I loved speaking with John Perdew about his work and career.
One thing that struck me was that he viewed this honor as not just for him, but for the entire field of DFT.

A hot pink flip phone has a DNA stand on the screen and the text says “text a teacher “you can get matched with a scientist for a virtual q&a in your classroom for free with Skype a scientist”
Many of us are really feeling helpless. This feeling is why I started @skypeascientist.bsky.social 8 years ago. We were doing the exact same thing then (currently feels worse?).
I have an action you can take today. Tell an educator about our program. Connect kids with science in spite of all this.

The Ishtar gate of Babylon, a blue brick structure decorated with cartoon animals.
Happy #PiDay 2024!
Let's talk about the history of pi (π) and the methods used to approximate it!
We start with the Babylonians (~2000 BCE), who used π = 3 for architectural projects, or in at least one instance, π = 25⁄8 = 3.128, which is within 0.5% of the actual value.
