(Best and simplest, IMO, to just use direct multiples of the line height for the main headings.)

(The whole idea is "vertical rhythm", in which the next thing to read is precisely where the brain expects it to be. The effect _seems_ real.)

Basically, even though CSS has ex measures (for x-height), you still can't quite locate the baseline without knowing the metrics of the font being used, or one almost identical to it (e.g., in my case, Plex has the same metrics as Roboto).

Side-by-side comparison of the typefaces IBM Plex Serif and Roboto Serif.

I've been tinkering around with a baseline grid in CSS lately. This is where all your lines of text sit on a constant line-spacing even when subheadings have different sizes. The linked article sums it all up.

Still, I benefit from people collecting. Its like with musical instruments: the collectors keep the market going, which gives the rest of us both more and better quality choices.

^^ +1. There are a few different applications that might justify having half a dozen pens you actually use, especially if you write everyday and sometimes all day. I do, and fountain pens are best for that. But I don't get collecting them. 1/2

Wait, what? The newer ones are better, surely? Better built, quicker to refill, more choices in every way. A Lamy 2000, Pelikan M800, or Pilot Vanishing Point will write all day every day and never need replacing.

How many #NewTestament #manuscript photos are in the public domain? Seems like an odd qn for such old documents, but they don't seem to exist on GitHub/WikiMedia. I'm wanting to make a little online reader app for educational purposes and as a UX/UI experiment.

Q. What are the good online #mindmap tools? Ideally something that can attach text to nodes and produce whole documents. (I'm liking mindmeister, of those I've tried, though I haven't yet found the keystroke to edit the current node.)

Pleasantly surprised to see that #crawl (Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, #dcss) compiles easily on Ubuntu 25. This release deprecated key-add for security reasons, so the `apt install crawl` instructions don't work, and the proper, URL-specific, way to install the keys is fiddlier than just compiling.

A Splintered Generation - Christianity Today Evangelicalism's fracturing is chronic, but not terminal. Keller Center staff Skyler R. Flowers and Michael Graham offer wisdom on how we can move forward.

Here's an interesting long read on #Evangelical fracturing in the USA: it makes the interesting point that it's not just positions but 'posture' that drive divisions, that is to say, not just being affectively or ideologically polarised, but it's also behaving in sharply different ways in response.

The Residence, on Netflix, is a curious and entertaining murder mystery. It has a Knives Out vibe, but is about nine hours long, so there are so many clues and red herrings that you don't get the "How did I miss that?" feeling at the end. You feel you would need the protagonist's eidetic memory.

Australian politics. Charts showing male and female two-party voting intentions over the past year.

Could be the Aussie Left is being a little to smug about the big election win. The LNP only lost it in the last few months through foreign intervention (Trump) and their own reflexive policy lurch toward the fringe, which especially alienated women, when that kicked in. #auspol #womenproblem

Reminded of this today by the reports that Macquarie University's Ancient Languages School may be closed down. I'd still be taking occasional courses there if I still lived in Sydney. There's nothing like it in the country. You might be able to draw a hemisphere in which there's nothing like it.
