If you are interested in this Quasar Catalogue, I highly suggest you read the original paper by Storey-Fisher et al. 2024. They did an amazing job in making their data public

We can verify our method with a simply logic: if we are really reconstructing the 3D dark matter field (δ) of the Universe, then the light from the Cosmic Microwave Background should be passing through this δ-field, imprinting a correlation between the two.

We find a 3-4σ detection of this signal!

Of course, Field Level Inference is quite a powerful method but also extremely sensitive to any contaminations...

For example, in earlier analysis, we found this "beast at the end of the Universe" which turned out to be just contamination from the Magellanic Clouds 😅

With it, we are able to obtain a full posterior of extremely interesting quantities that helps us better understand the Universe at very large scales.

We used this incredible machinery by @aquilascience.bsky.social called BORG which is a very hardcore Hamiltonian Monte Carlo which samples the initial conditions of the Universe, evolves it with a gravity model, adds survey characteristics, compares it with data and accept/reject and repeat!

The Quaia Quasar Catalogue spams an enormous cosmic volume, allowing us to reconstruct the ICs, matter density, and dynamics up to a volume of 1000 (Gpc/h)^3 (yes, GIGA PARSECS!).

Compared to other Stage-III and even something like @ec-euclid.bsky.social, Quaia is a beast of a sample!
