Finally let me say that DHH is not the only guy behind Rails. He definitely has the last word on many topics, but I think that judging the entire project and the work of many thousands based on one guy is kinda disrespectful for everyone else involved.

Also I have to say that most of the original argument is based on things happening outside of the Rails project. I yet have to see someone's PR rejected because DHH disagreed with him/her on politics. For sure I've seen it happen for technical reasons or collisions with the overall vision.

Maybe this is where my European mentality collides with yours.

Even though I would't mind living in an emphatic environment, the correlation between that and the success or failure of a project is not obvious to me and definitely not proven...

Of course I'm not saying that you should not argue or disagree with someone else, but that should stay outside the OS space. Last time I checked, it was supposed to be a common good for all humankind.

As long as the project is going in the right technical direction, it's not a concern for me. Sorry

This take is really concerning tbh... OS is a collective effort by definition. We can all have the most diverse views on life, but we should all put that aside to achieve great things together.

It's unreasonable to never have to interact with people you disagree with.

This horrific period ended only when the silent majority and moderates from the entire political spectrum started to speak up against intolerant people and found a middle ground.

So I guess my point is simply that we should all try to be more moderate and lower the tension. That’s it.

The problem is that all of this doesn’t recall the 20s and the rise of fascism to me. It’s more like the 70s in Italy where people were extremely polarized and politically divided. We suffered from a bunch of terrible terrorist/bomb attacks from both left and right extremists...

Not really sure what you’re referring to here: “the leader openly supports people who want you dead”. You meant Tommy Robinson & Co?

I disagree myself with many DHH’s views, but that doesn’t affect my judgment of Rails nor my involvement in the project.

P.S: don’t you think fascist is kind of a strong word in this context? I’m Italian and trust me, it’s not something you’d tell to every right-leaning/conservative person

Since all these posts start with “I love Rails”, my assumption is that the project is actually going in the right direction. OS is a collective effort and by definition you must be open to collaborate with many different people.

You're right, polarization sucks... we've had our fair share of political terrorism and divisions both in Italy and in Europe as a whole. We only solved the problem when the silent majority began speaking up and bringing reason and moderation back to the table. I have the same hope for the US.

Maybe it's my European mentality, but I really don't understand why someone's opinions should invalidate their work. I've yet to find a comment in the source code that promotes far-right agendas... If you don't like their views, just stop reading the blog or listening to the podcasts.
