A Red-Winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) in full flight glory on Ocracoke Island NC (US) on March 9th 2025. Found throughout the US northern Mexico and over to the Baja and will breed well into the southern Canadian Provinces from Nova Scotia to British Columbia. Found commonly in fresh and saltwater wetlands clinging to the stalks of swaying Phragmites and Sea Oats. They are known to be bold and a few will group attack a hawk or crow that flies near nesting areas. I never tire of the flash of bright red with yellow bordered wings across a marsh. The contrast to their very black bodies is striking. Up close you can see tiny flecks of yellow/brown on their breast. OM1 OM 150-600
