I find kids now are often nervous about things that used to be ordinary like talking to shop staff or other strangers because it's largely out of their experience. online activity means they don't talk to strangers. Not going out means you mix with a very small, curated group and that must be bad

@mrjamesob.bsky.social although the reasons kids are now always inside are complex 1 reason is our attitude to children. I constantly see Facebook posts on local groups with photos complaining about kids playing outside with footballs/ making noise / running around or heaven forbid 'standing around'

@mrjamesob.bsky.social Disruptive kids drove me mad at school in the 90s.There was a culture, that behaving well/ working hard saw you labelled 'a boffin' which was a terrible insult in the 1990s & left you open to ridicule. These kids got the teachers focus over hard working kids who were struggling

@mrjamesob.bsky.social I will never forget seeing a child i knew to have a difficult home life crying on the last day of term, asking the teaching assistant if she could still come in on Monday. For kids for whom school is a refuge the long holiday must be hell.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social the saddest thing is fish and chips are still not wrapped in newspaper & the signs in the Dartford tunnel remain unchanged so these people must still be as unhappy as ever.

Just in from mammoth interview session to two bits of news. One that a DV perp got locked up because of something I did and that a vulnerable constituent had a a massive wrongful debt written off after our intervention. This is why I came to politics, this is why I'll just keep cracking on.
