Happy Mother's Day
Our gift this year to Mother Earth
More governments beguiled by greed
Too late we’ll comprehend her worth
Again more climate debt incurred
Each broken record beat, repeat
Our gift this year to Mother Earth
We all should be on red alert
Instead, her sources we deplete
Too late we’ll comprehend her worth
Our gaze, not crises, we avert
Deep pockets buy our swift defeat
Our gift this year to Mother Earth
Our home burned up for short-term mirth
A race to space, elitist treat
Too late we’ll comprehend her worth
Her plight denied, each cure deferred
We make the choice to overheat
Our gift this year to Mother Earth
Too late we’ll comprehend her worth
A mother's day villanelle. (Can be read in alt text of the image as well.)

This gift is a lovely gesture
But comes with a little pressure
You think I'll keep this thing alive
And maybe even make it thrive
I'll try my best, I really will
But you've got dreams I can't fulfil
I assume you want this tree to bloom...
Instead you sent it to its doom

A poem written on a gradient soft yellow and pink background with a large semi-transparent number 8 on it. The poem reads:
I know the right number
But it seems out of reach
When I work on these poems
What I don't do is sleep
I aim for that number
Yet it's not even close
"Your alarm's in six hours!"
My phone helpfully shows
I can't get that number
When I go to bed late
So my brain's kinda broken
Getting nowhere near eight
😴

That's true. (I think I even read somewhere that time is the most commonly used noun in the English language.)

A black and white (tuxedo) cat made of Lego bricks is sitting on a wooden desk, in front of a white wall.
The poem below is not part of the picture, but went over Bluesky's character limit:
At last I too can have a cat
That doesn't make me sneeze
Whose aloof, laid-back affection
Won't make me itch or wheeze
He doesn't need much maintenance
No food, no litter box
Will not push things off the table
Or hiss at any dogs
So smooth and sharp, he's hard to pet
Won't purr, or scratch, or play
Though he can't curl up in my lap
I love him anyway
At last I too can have a cat
That doesn't make me sneeze
Whose aloof, laid-back affection
Won't make me itch or wheeze

The flies buzz
The dogs bark
(The cats are nowhere to be found)
It's so hot
It's so dark
(Nobody wants to stick around)
Just one word
Just one spark
(Enough to burn it to the ground)
... Nonsense for today's #NaPoWriMo 😐

Just the tech, and not the heart
When life imitates art
We must all be on our guard
For utopian predictions

Yeah, time might be too big of a subject for a fairly short poem. XD But I've also been thinking about how I'm spending my time, and how to use my time better, maybe.

Small black text on a gray and white gradient background:
We keep trying
to change the world, but
it seems impossible
when we watch the news
and see history repeat itself.
What if we hold a rally,
be silenced
and will not
be able to keep fighting?
There will always be people who will
try to burn the world down, and
Things will get dire, but
we've seen it all happen before.
We will be tempted to give up, because
What's the point?
We will be tempted to give up, because
we've seen it all happen before.
Things will get dire, but:
try to burn the world down, and
there will always be people who will
be able to keep fighting
and will not
be silenced.
What if we hold a rally,
and see history repeat itself?
When we watch the news
it seems impossible
to change the world, but
we keep trying.

Time doesn't fly
It rolls in with the tide
It's a walk in the park
(on your own, after dark)
Time can't be saved
With its wild, crushing waves
Feel its calm, steady flow
(of regrets, fear, and hope)
Time can't be kept
Never loose, never trapped
That hazy illusion
(lacks start and conclusion)

A poem written in black text on a soft pink background:
So slowly, near unnoticed, all was lost
Preoccupied, we looked the other way
I guess we didn't know what it would cost
I can't remember all the lines we crossed
Into the great wide open did we stray
So slowly, near unnoticed, all was lost
The scalding sun, the treetops lined with frost
We'd play pretend the skies had not turned grey
I guess we didn't know what it would cost
It almost feels like we were double crossed
As if there'd been a way for us to stay
So slowly, near unnoticed, all was lost
We never thought we'd see our names embossed
So sure there'd always be another day
I guess we didn't know what it would cost
The future that we banked on just got tossed
And now we're left with nothing but decay
So slowly, near unnoticed, all was lost
I guess we didn't know what it would cost
Attempting #NaPoWriMo this month...

Thank you! 😃❤️ (I'm still struggling with the best format for posting stories like this on Bluesky - although remembering to post here at all is also still challenging, tbh. 😆😂)

No Adventures
Fairy tale (-ish)
285 words
Rhyming fiction
The road she walked felt smooth and... wrong.
No thrilling adventures nearing.
She sought and yearned for twists and turns,
yet wandered a hundred clearings.
On bright and sunny days she searched
for dark and dangerous business.
But all was fine, no signs of crime,
nor villainy did she witness.
These are the first paragraphs of the short (rhyming) story I wrote this week. To read all 285 words of it, visit my site: wp.me/pdXzHE-5E

While I agree that 1945 *should* really be only 60 years ago, it was, in fact, almost 80 years ago. 😉

White text against a blue (sky) background:
Give us a scapegoat
Somebody to blame
Someone to embody
Our fears and our shame
Cry witch hunt
Point fingers
Belittle
Cry wolf
Sell us delusions
Vend thinly veiled hate
Deceive, vent, distract us
Until it's too late
Going to try to post more on here, starting with this poem. (Not sure if posting them in a picture format works well here though.)

Going to use my day off to try to finish the (rhyming...) short story I've been working on.
(I have said this just about every time I had a day off these past few months, but at some point I will run out of things to rewrite... right?)

I'm assuming "agonising" isn't really the way you're supposed to describe coming up with a casual 30 word post.

Agonising over what to post on social media (something witty? something profound? a smart observation?) is always a great way to ensure my mind will suddenly go completely blank.
