Thanks to the #e-COL+ project, its skeleton and taxidermy have been digitised in #3D, bringing together two historic @mnhn.fr treasures in a unique digital model!

10 years ago, the London NHM cleverly manufactured a controversy when they announced they'd be replacing Dippy the Diplodocus in their main hall with a blue whale skeleton.

Long story short, the whale rules, in spite of its notable handicap of not being a dinosaur. 🧵

L'équipe de Consult.O., Thierry Oudoire et Hugo Bordet, a numérisé et reconstruit plus d’une centaine de référents (« types porte-noms ») d’ammonites des #collections de paléontologie-géologie de l’Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1. Merci à Nicolas Rinder pour la formation et l’accompagnement ! 👏 L’intervention a pu être réalisée grâce au soutien du Laboratoire de Biogéosciences - UBE CNRS EPHE de l’Université Bourgogne Europe. Merci à Emmanuel Fara ! 💡 L'intervention s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet e-COL+. Elle illustre la politique de #numérisation3D, de soutien à la #recherche en #paléontologie et de mise en valeur des collections.

Dan Sinopoli analysed 55 specimens of bowfin and garfish. One of the specimens scanned by #eCOL+ showed the remains of its last meal!

Wow, nature is too cool! Structures on stinkbug hind legs that used to be interpreted as ears are actually chambers with fungi. The bugs coat their eggs in those fungi to protect them against parasitoid wasps. 🧪

Added a few newly collected Ichneumon species to Ichneumonids of North America. Amazingly, I've found 31 different species based on females when records only show 4 for the state! Compare that with 57 species in Main, which is probably a fairly complete inventory.

A few behind-the-scenes photos of Minimalist Coryphodon. After a couple colleagues expressed disappointment that our “giant” of the Paleocene wasn’t all that giant, I pushed for a more agro pose.

I wanted visitors to leave understanding that an animal this size could easily crush them!

I used my 3D printer to create educational anatomical models of the brains of fish, frog, & lizard 🐟🐸🦎 The (color-blind friendly) colors demonstrate anatomical regions, and the 🧠 are many times larger than their real size. They can be removed from their stands for closer examination/comparison 🧪

4000 arthropod specimens from @mnhn.fr are being digitized using synchrotron microCT at @esrf.fr , with a high-throughput pipeline developed for #e-COL+.
