Aye, you’re right. I went back to last season’s results for Saturday 7th September (4-1 defeat to PV), and the league table at the time. However, the BBC have transposed this season’s table in its place. We were better off at this stage last season.

We were 20th with 4 points, having just been beaten 4-1 by Port Vale at home, last season. This season we are 20th with 4 points, having just been beaten 3-2 by Bristol Rovers. It doesn’t make for a comfortable circumstances but it does suggest there is hope. Win the league of four at the bottom.

A couple of years ago I was ambivalent about James Clarke, then, last season, I thought he’d be a key player, due to lack of experience, and it turned out he was. I have read he was missed today. Clarke’s elevation is a bellwether as to how standards around him have dropped. Enjoy that lovely pub!!

With it being four years since Joss Labadie moved on, it’s certainly time we unearthed a replacement.

It’ll get more difficult as opposing managers get the opportunity to see how we are set up and counter what we do well and exploit our weaknesses. However, we should be capable of doing the same to the opposition. I didn’t see a lot of it last year and hope this season will be different.

We’ve become very good at defending the box, with teams (Barnet and Crawley at least) having to pass back and forth, creating little penetration. However, we do seem to crack after 90 minutes. Is it concentration, tiredness, or both? Regardless, it looks better, organisationally, than last season.

The concerns around Morecambe, and I’m hoping they survive, illustrates the importance of lower league football clubs to the communities they represent. That’s why, what happened to Wimbledon will, for me, remain unforgivable.

I think we can give Notts a game, particularly as they are bedding in a blended ‘technical board’ approach, which gives input in playing matters to the owners (where have I seen that fail before?). I’m going for a draw.

The jury remains out for me. We still have significant weaknesses, although the setup looked more ‘intelligent’ than last season. We didn’t have to play out from the back regardless of circumstances and the long ball was there if required.

Tzanev, on top of having a very good game as a shot stopper, came out and successfully collected a corner. I can’t remember the last time I saw such bold action from a County keeper.

We did look harder to break down than last season but still ended up with a similar outcome, conceding two goals.

I felt Tom Davies was substituted 10 minutes too early. Barnet let the ball do a lot of the work, while we chased and chased. I thought we would run out of steam by the end of the game, particularly when a mysterious 8 (which turned into 9) minutes of added time appeared.
