This is such an important point.

Also: pangolins are the perfect animal. I love them so much I almost can’t stand it.

I was honored to speak at the MN #StandUpForScience2025 rally yesterday abt the need to shift science outreach focus from informal settings to formal K-12.
Invigorating to gather w so many concerned abt anti-science efforts in the US!
Thanks for your leadership

Science is (ideally) the careful collection and documentation of observations, and an honest, ongoing debate about what those observations most likely mean.

Lab coats optional.

Happy International Women's Day! Despite the efforts, while much more women enter scientific fields, due to numerous factors, few manage to remain in the field or secure senior positions. Support your coworkers, call out harmful systemic behaviour. 😘

HHMI is a wonderful organization that has done and supported amazing work that has made measurable impacts across science and science education. I hope that there is a valid reason for the cancellation.

I really didn’t want this to be true. But it is. HHMI funding is all private. There is no good reason for this program to be pulled.

We’d all love for climate science to be apolitical. But it’s notβ€”and can’t be.

This book explains why. Eye-opening and highly recommended!

Scientists Think the World's Oldest Dinosaur Fossils May Still Be Awaiting Discovery We just have to find them... and that might be a problem.

One of my biggest pet peeves is the phrase "dig for fossils." Fossils really need to be on or at the surface to be found, and that means that what we have found is a teeeeeeeeeny little portion of what's out there. Isn't that exciting?

Very chilly week here, so got some suet pellets as well as peanuts.

Steller's had to pause to sort out how to get more in their beak.

@jerrid.bsky.social is exactly right when he says, "We're not changing the concepts, we're just changing the words. And if words scare us, then we do run into a slippery slope of freedom of speech and all the fascism stuff that people are talking about.”

You could think it's not a big deal to say "biological change over time" instead of "evolution," but you'd be wrong.

a group of young children are playing soccer on a lush green field Alt: Little kids playing soccer on a green grassy field. It’s chaotic.

I say this with love to my friends in science who don’t know what to do right now: think about kids playing soccer.

We can all just chase the ball & try to kick it at the same time. (It may even go in the direction we want it to!)

But we can play better, together, if we know our positions.

Bird! A blue jay. Sitting on a bent branch of a dogwood tree, the branch mounded with snow, the dappling of late day sunlight behind. The blue jay is in the left of frame, facing right, its tuft slicked back and catching the golden light. In its mouth -- er, it's beak, is the beak its mouth, or is the mouth inside the beak okay never mind whatever -- IN THE BEAK is a peanut. A treasure. A prize. A little snack. The blue jay looks quite pleased at what it is found in the snow -- taken before a squirrel could get it. Photo by me, Chuck Wendig

ANYWAY, sorry, here's a bird. Pause and regard the bird. The bird is happy, for the bird has found a peanut. May we all find the small joy of finding a tasty snack today.
