OBR: Net-zero is much cheaper than thought for UK – and unchecked global warming far more costly - Carbon Brief Reaching net-zero will be much cheaper for the UK government than previously expected – and the economic damages of climate change far more severe.

If you want to know what OBR really said on all this, I wrote a brief summary

TL;DR: Since net-zero is much cheaper than thought and unchecked global warming is far more costly than thought,Β climate action makes even more sense than thought

This is an absolute Godsend on a day like today. There's a lot wrong with the world of corporate cost-cutting, so it feels right to celebrate things being better. Thanks @lner.co.uk (and @greateranglia.bsky.social too)

I moved from my home town where residential areas have practically nothing in the way of trees and green to a place where wooded areas surround each cluster of homes, I am astounded at the difference. It's hard to see how they can 'retrofit' the trees near the housing without removing homes though.

Mine is fine but I am sorry to hear that yours sounds high. Do you have anything planned today that will help you manage it?

Thank you for helping me appreciate that I have this. I keep forgetting it isn't usual for so many parts of the world.

"WE'VE ARRANGED A society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?"
"Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along."

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.

Thank you for all you do.

I can really get behind the long naps, not so much the humongous workloads though.

Right, Qualifying time for the Miami meet of the Formula E - bring it on!

The race itself clashes with Dr Who so one of them will have to be watched on delay as I think 2 screens might be a bit much.

We have a lot of moss in our rather damp little garden and one of my favourite things is watching the birds this time of year selecting their favourite bit to use in their nests. I didn't know this about the moss though, that's brilliant.

Jump (For My Love)
YouTube video by Buskerteers Choir - Topic Jump (For My Love)

It's all rather an exciting time for our choir - today is the release of our unofficial Comic Relief single, that I actually sang on (along with hundreds of others!)
If you get the chance, it would be great if you could listen to it on the usual services..

The news has been more than a bit grim of late, so hooray for @carbonbrief.org providing some genuine and really meaningful **good** news: the UK's carbon emissions in 2024 were the lowest since 1872, because demand for fossil fuels just keeps decreasing.

Aww, but if you get measles you get the bonus free gift of immunity amnesia - a lovely complete reset so you get to experience all the fabulous illnesses you have already had. All the old classics.

(1/3) It needs repeating: in 1994, Ukraine was persuaded to give up its nuclear weapons to Russia in return for the US, the UK, and Russia guaranteeing Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

β€œIf you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”

A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

I was about to say just this. I agree.

Although if there are ways to further reduce the dust then that would be even better.

I'm currently just over half way through 'We Are All Birds of Uganda' by Hafsa Zayyan. So much recent history whose value is amplified in a story that shows the human impact.

There's much we can learn, the behaviour of Idi Amin and his regime would bear particular examination and reflection.

We have made it through January, it may be cold for a while but it is noticeable that the days are starting to get a little bit longer. I always feel a little bit like I am emerging from my chrysalis tis time of year.

Also, it's pay day.
