It all tracks with your hypothesis here. People *say* they want a challenge, but I think the majority of gamers aren't willing to grapple with what that actually means when you really get into the juicy details of it.

The only way to win these is to pretty much become a master of the game. Yet, I see these two specifically critiqued as "bad achievement design".

This even applies in the majority of challenge runs, like No Return mode or Low%.

CotN eschews typical meta-progression by only having it in single-zone mode. When you think you're ready for full runs, training wheels are off - full item pool unlocked, no extra power-ups to start.
