"Die Nibelungen" is a German tragedy by Friedrich Hebbel in three parts, and was originally intended for performance over two evenings. The individual parts are: The Invulnerable Siegfried, Siegfried's Death and Kriemhild's Revenge. Hebbel wrote the drama between the years 1850 and 1860. The first two parts were first performed on 31 January 1861. It is considered one of the most noteworthy adaptations of the Nibelung material for the theater.

Richard Wagner based his opera cycle "Der Ring des Nibelungen" almost entirely on the Old Norse versions of the Nibelung saga. Wagner's preference for the Old Norse versions followed a popular judgment of the time period: the Nordic versions were seen as being more "original" than the courtly story portrayed in the German poem.

Histoire des commencements de la rΓ©publique aux Pays-Bas (1872) is a book about the early history of the republic in the Netherlands. It is centred on the period 1581-1625, marked by the Eighty Years' War and the proclamation of independence. The Republic of the United Provinces, born of the Union of Utrecht in 1579, emerged from a conflict with the Spanish Monarchy, led by William of Orange.

In the evening R. reads me the first act of Hebbel's Nibelungen for fun - an incredible bad piece of work. - My mother [Marie d'Agoult] sends the first volume of her history of the Netherlands.

Some people had some idea that I was going to save the world, it’s not my world how can I, all I got to talk about is folks getting together. In a big Universe like this, there ought to be something better than what there is..

August used to be a boring month for a new music listener in NYC.
