It’s an English phrase from the 15th century. We can blame Americans for a lot, but there is nothing more euphemistic than our own English language. It’s used commonly in the States. It doesn’t bother me all that much, to be honest, especially in the context of offering condolences. Whatever helps.

Why can’t it be both? The article is written by a university chair of global public health, pretty sure he knows his stuff.

Please keep the pressure on Melbourne University. Meanjin magazine was never theirs to buy or sell, it belongs to the Arts community.

The decision to close Meanjin misunderstands its wider importance. Australian culture deserves better The decision to close Meanjin is the latest in a string of recent decisions that suggest universities are not safe harbours for priceless cultural institutions.

If Melbourne University Publishing doesn’t want to keep publishing Meanjin, they should hand over the journal to someone worthy of the responsibility. Me in The Conversation theconversation.com/the-decision...

I hope so too but that isn’t how things tend to work, unfortunately. We need the support of everyone who cares about the arts and public education in order to turn this around now. Writers can’t do this alone.
