I don't even fucking know anymore. I guess I do tech when I'm employed, I'm Jewish and my body hates me.

05.08.2025 14:23 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0βAI is coming to take our jobsβ no it isnβt. Itβs a CEO named Gary taking some shitty advice from a VC who has never had a real job in their life, trying to maximise their quarterly earnings by firing as many people as they can get away with to make number go up, and it isnβt sustainable
13.06.2025 08:16 β π 1586 π 525 π¬ 14 π 8Wait, you mean that Superman, a character created by two Jews and based on Jewish culture and mythos, wasn't supposed to be a Jesus analogy?
02.08.2025 23:21 β π 9 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0My child has received "goat socks" as a gift and my new fear is that he'll be talking about them, misspeak, and anyone in earshot who was internet aware in the aughts will call CPS on us.
02.08.2025 23:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Except for Sasha and Paul's kiddo. It's the same blank expression with a smile in both photos. ;)
02.08.2025 17:32 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I can see how that framing is too strong. I guess what I was trying to say (after getting a night of sleep) is that there are still a surprising number of people that don't believe that the Safety-II approach is a thing and that makes some interesting things happen in industry.
26.07.2025 13:07 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That's precisely why I brought it up. I had a feeling that understanding the split in the field might help you hone in on what you're looking for. :)
26.07.2025 04:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Probably Hollnagel, E. (2014). Safety-I and Safety-II: The past and future of safety management. There are a number of far quicker reads out there that'll also get you where you gotta go, but most will eventually cite this or something else from Hollnagel.
26.07.2025 04:25 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I don't think I've seen it said in responses yet, but you're quickly going to run into discussions of Safety-I vs Safety-II, which divides the field. My guess, based on what you've said elsewhere is you're most interested in people who still hold a Safety-I mindset and how they impact system design
26.07.2025 04:14 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0You may also wish to add resilience engineering to that lit review as its related in a lot of ways. @norootcause.surfingcomplexity.com maintains this repo with links out to a lot of journal articles and explaining a good number of concepts github.com/lorin/resili...

But I must break that rule in this case because I hate Hulk Hogan very much. He is a big ugly goon and I want to squash his face."

So, he's good for the main thing I need him for, which is figuring out which specialists I need to go to for what. But, outside of that, he's been hit or miss. I've only had him for a year though.
24.07.2025 18:11 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I've heard that others existed but was told this was a rare trigger when I told my PCP that I thought it was one of mine. I hate this so much for both of us but at least we have company!

24.07.2025 17:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Welp. I've joined the ranks of people who've been laid off. Would love to hear if anyone is hiring managers in the platform/sre/telemetry/incidents/etc. space.

16.07.2025 23:14 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I keep thinking about the first devopsdays Madison where he turned a significant portion of the afterparty into Cubs fans for the night. His joy at seeing his team win the World Series was so infectious.

Jeff was the kind of person who became friends with everyone and made lifelong memories for people right after meeting him. There are so many places where his presence will be sorely missed.
His memory will be a blessing.
A good 70% of the fighting over AI would have been avoided if VC hucksters (and gullible access journalists) hadn't conflated incrementally useful automation with computational sentience to make money
11.07.2025 14:15 β π 1079 π 209 π¬ 21 π 19You know, a company with an incident analysis program is a little bit like the mule with a spinning wheel. No one knows how he got it, and danged if he knows how to use it.
08.07.2025 13:07 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Adding onto this, once a place is willing to scrap the status quo, there have been good resources that interested parties could find like the Etsy Debriefing Guide and Howie.
Exposure to the communities that talked about those (eg devopsdays) is what gets/got people to improve those practices.
Another legal argument that we havent seen played out, and that I've heard has been used internally at some of these companies is that it's the user and not the company who is legally responsible for whether or not the produced works violate copyright/licenses.
24.06.2025 22:18 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Are you (or someone you know) interested in helping organize @chicago.devopsdays.org ?

Maybe! A big difference we see here is the feedback loops between the agent and an engineer are significantly quicker than you'd have with a contractor and with none of the intraorganizational issues. I think that opens things up to shifts in that kind of paradigm.
20.06.2025 16:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That's fair! But, to me, the point in time an LLM runs at still makes it feel like more of the abstraction level of getting code from a contractor and needing to modify or work through it with them and less like the code created by a compiler.
20.06.2025 15:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I think its valuable to talk about how the transition to abstractions like compilers made people uncomfortable and were net positive.
But, I also dont think the comparison is 1:1 for type of abstraction.
