10.10.2025 10:28 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0yes, exactly - but i intentionally didn't use a computer metaphor because I'm not just talking about engineers or tech people. im talking about ari shapiro and your uncle and aunt and your adult nephew
10.10.2025 09:30 β π 29 π 2 π¬ 3 π 0JP @jplebreton@mastodon.social something platforms like this (that started by wholesale copying a decent % of twitter's patterns) really need is "show me a list of who boosted this post, sorted by how many followers they have". when a random person's post suddenly gets a lot of attention it is imperative you help them know where all the attention is coming from. i wasn't being harassed or anything, but people in other cases absolutely will be.

You need to give it an access token of course.
Soo early morning thoughtβ¦..
Folks see how having the desire and fulfillment of a never disagreeing servant is destroying empathy and cognition
WHEN IT IS A COMPUTER
but donβt thing slavery could be the foundation dynamic thatβs destroying America ?
We banned a guy on the Steam forums for repeatedly saying there were βtoo many womenβ in our game
So he flipped his positive review to negative
Still totally worth it
This is something that would show up in patch notes for Civilization 10
10.10.2025 09:20 β π 78 π 14 π¬ 1 π 0I think this is 100% it.
They see the product as deterministic, and they imagine that creating art is "solving a problem" in the way that getting something to compile is
they think of writing as work, and think well if i could get a magic box that did my work for me, of course i would use it. and they legitimately do not understand why some people are appalled by the idea of producing content with AI
10.10.2025 09:26 β π 100 π 10 π¬ 5 π 0i think the fundamental disconnect here, and i say this as an engineer without much creative talent, is that a lot of people who don't do creative things regularly (or ever) look at creative output (writing, music, whatever) as a product, and consume and experience it like a baby looking at a mobile
10.10.2025 09:24 β π 219 π 37 π¬ 6 π 2aside from the current meta-conversation this is entirely true within companies too.
I've seen teams with incredible tech get routed around by the rest of the company because they are so convinced of their own master plan that they stop listening to what users actually need.
tbh i can tell when someone has limited experience in the FOSS space because they often treat the userbase as an annoying burden instead of building out mechanisms to make sure they have a seat at the table.
the internet is riddled with graveyards of FOSS projects that egotrip lowtaxed themselves.

Ideally in a healthy environment we'd be able to retro all this - what I do not see yet is anything that isn't explainable by him being (maybe overly) cautious & uncommunicative.
I'm very carefully withholding judgment for many reasons - and I'm also holding out the possibility that BOTH sides were partially in error - but given the chaotic nature of the communication, I can understand/sympathize with not being sure who to tell and waiting to hear more. 1/

I think part of it too is that the old ops culture was fundamentally apprenticeship-based - I learned all my Linux stuff from DEC admins who learned their UNIX from 2/
It's absolutely true. I sort of exist in a liminal superimposed space here - on the one hand I'm eternally the outsider (Docker & k8s happened when I was at Puppet and they made me big mad) and I am also the insider (I've run k8s and managed k8s teams), so in my conception of the world, I both 1/

Agree it's super sad to watch.
Love this naming - I talk a lot about the split between coding & engineering. Coding is fun, hobbyist-friendly. Engineering is (often) boring, predictable, and designed for repetitive low-information work at scale .
They both have their place but it's critical for engineering to enter the chat.
Vibe coding is irresponsibly building software through dice rolls, not caring what code is produced
What about when engineers at the top of their game use AI tools responsibly to accelerate their work?
I propose "vibe engineering"!

Friends, I don't mean to be gross and romantic post all over main but
You really can marry your best friend.
And as someone who did it the other way earlier in life, let me tell you. It's worth holding out for.
Mutual trust & understanding do things love can't do all on its own.
