Congratulations Dr Kaitlin Naughten on receiving the EGU Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Early Career Scientists!

Her work has transformed understanding of Antarctic ice-shelf melt and future sea-level rise.

She says, โ€œIt was a lovely surprise to hear that I'd won this prestigious award."

Antarctica may have crossed a tipping point that leads to rising seas Scientists are beginning to understand the sudden loss of sea ice in Antarctica โ€“ and there is growing evidence that it represents a permanent shift with potentially catastrophic consequences

Antarctica may have passed a climate tipping point of no return, scientists are warning, with mounting evidence that a sudden slump in sea ice formation since 2016 is linked to human-induced ocean warming.

Antarctica: Government opposed to polar geoengineering - Committees - UK Parliament The Environmental Audit Committee has published the Government’s response to the Committee’s report on ‘the UK and the Antarctic environment’.

The UK Government has clarified that it is opposed to polar #geoengineering

"This week a group of 42 polar scientists published analysis which found that proposed geoengineering techniques were not feasible and could even be โ€œenvironmentally dangerousโ€.

Underwater curtains and reflective beads are โ€˜unrealistic and dangerous polar geoengineering ideasโ€™ Climate research group says such ideas are diverting attention from cutting fossil fuel use Proposals to fight the impact of the climate crisis at the poles, from giant underwater curtains to scattering glass beads across the ice, have been dismissed by a group of scientists as an โ€œunimaginably expensiveโ€ and โ€œdangerousโ€ distraction. Geoengineering, which includes blocking sunlight with airborne particles and thickening ice with pumped seawater, has become highly divisive among scientists. Its proponents argue that, with cuts in carbon emissions going far too slowly, exploring options for โ€œemergency brakesโ€ would be valuable. Continue reading...
