Where are the great reckonings with Dwan’s minstrel shows in I Dream of Jeannie and Sweethearts on Parade? I think the dossier does a fine job, but I think the world could do with a deeper interrogation of these films

part of this is knowing that the filmmakers will see my reviews, and that they are actively working- I can harm/help them in however small a way I do. the other part is that most new films aren’t great, even if they are good, or at least don’t fit into the modes of cinema that interest me most.

every time I write about a new film I want to kill myself. this doesn’t happen in the same way with older films. what is this.

how does one tell if their short film is good. I vary on all of my work (as I assume most people do?) I know I’ll only get better, at least. took a jump with one into something completely foreign to me with analogue film and did away with all words/music 🤷

every time someone says zone of interest ‘sounded really good’ I know they’ve never watched Memoria

I couldn’t stand Under the Skin when I first watched a few years ago… going to see Zone of Interest today expecting something similar. For some reason Glazer’s particular brand of philosophical emptiness bothers me greatly. DB lands for me because it seems aware of its emptiness and plays into it 🤷

just watched Disco Boy (2024). bites off more than it can chew but I’ll gladly take an edgelord beau travail over whatever grief-as-character arthouse bullshit a24 is putting out these days. would I rather watch Beau Travail? sure. but I’d rather watch Beau Travail than 99.99% of movies.

Some are floating around vk on okru, but the quality isn’t great… but even with the pretty bad transfer I really like creek, body tracks, and labyrinth blood imprint. hoping to see more soon.
