From Image to UML: First Results of Image Based UML Diagram Generation Using LLMs In software engineering processes, systems are first specified using a modeling language such as UML. These initial designs are often collaboratively created, many times in meetings where different do...

The diagrams are btw generated with PlantUML, gpt-4o is quite capable of generating good PlantUML code. This work is motivated by these great folks who were able to generate UML diagrams from hand drawings using LLMs. arxiv.org/abs/2404.11376

For the PoC, I used gpt-4o. Next step is to see if also SMLs or at least a "small LLM" can do a good job.

It's fun to see how LLMs can be used to develop UML/ER diagrams. I've to say the diagrams are already pretty good with just a brief sys prompt and ~1 hour of coding. Now, we'll develop an LLM-based tutor to iteratively work with students on diagrams and help to detect misconceptions. #csed #cs1
