It means they either deal Reinbacher, or they deal Xhekaj.. & either Matheson or Ghule drop to 3rd pair.

Either way there’s something I’m going to hate.

Found it odd that STL had basically decided he was NHL ready when they made the trade.. he hadn’t graduated in MTL for a reason.

At best he hadn’t shown he was ready yet, at worst…

Especially a team like STL that has had such a solid D corps for so long.. figure they’d know better.

Regardless I still remember it being seen by most as a rich deal at the time… and that MB didn’t have much of a choice given the fiasco of losing his 2 other C’s.

Agree.. I remember most people at the time viewed it as a pretty rich deal.. was even in one of those « worst contracts » lists that some do.

After losing Danault & KK, Bergevin was desperate to lock up his last remaining C.

Thankfully he grew to earn & exceed the contract since.

I really don't think Dach is a viable 2C option if we're serious about contending now, nor is Kapanen.

I think Habs still love Reinbacher, he spends yr in Laval.. but expect him to be ready to graduate some time next yr.

Habs will have 3RD.. Lane goes back to LD, pushes Matheson to 3rd pair.

Thing is if you keeping him, you're making a push to be better earlier. It's likely followed by the acquisition of a 2C during the season, Sid or other.

So it would have to be a long term lower AAV deal.
If this was the plan, too bad they didn't take advantage of deferred $ before that option died

Depends what Habs intend to do with Reinbacher & Xhekaj.

If god forbid they intend to deal Reinbacher.. then they can sign Matheson top4 $.

Else Matheson can only make 3rd pair $.. AND that means Xhekaj is dealt.

Just find it funny that nobody really speaks of the fallout of keeping Mike.

The potential is undeniable, I’m just nitpicking in terms of roster balance.. lots of offense & puck moving, a bit lacking not just with grit but also truly solid defensive talent.

Some tough decisions will need to be made.. hoping ability to defend will be a key consideration.

Same.. we’ll just need to address how few guys we have that are truly solid defensively.

F: Evans, Suzuki, Kapanen
D: Ghule, Carrier.. soon Reinbacher

The rest, while some can manage much better than others no doubt.. not as reliable.

Lots of Habs love passing, and when they do shoot they’re not the best at hitting the net.
They play like a team who should have 40+ shots, yet usually end in the 20´s.

Not quite as similar as my two 1st rounders traded for a coveted established F.
