It was so nice, just what I was looking for, to the extent that I kind of didn't want to tell anyone, in case it gets too crowded.

Recapping: Royal Grounds is dead as of August 31, long live Royal Grounds. The Malt Shop is back, baby. And that's the latest for extremely local food news.

So we hated the second version of The Malt Shop. And they took the hint (everyone agreed with us) and they went out of business. But now a completely new owner has come in, renovated, reopened. But crucially, their menu is back to the old style. Food tasted good, prices fair, a family destination.

Nothing lasts forever. But sometimes businesses get resurrected. We had dinner tonight at the latest incarnation of The Malt Shop. We loved the old place, family owned for a decades. They closed. Someone else came in, remodeled, jacked up prices, futzed with the simple formula of burgers and malts.

I've only had one published article so far, and that was about the first permitless parade the neighborhood holds in honor of this cafe -- a few years ago the owners tried to sell and the deal fell through at the last second, so our "we'll miss you" parade pivoted to "stay here forever". Well...

One of our favorite super local cafés, Royal Grounds, is closing. They lost their lease, though there may be mysterious struggles between the factions of owners/labor/landlord beyond "yeah the lease was here and then we lost it." The workers may be taking over, though, and if that works out, great!

Gosh, if only some world builders were, in fact, paying limited or more expansive attention to agriculture, material culture, ordinary life & how magic and the larger social structure helps or harms the ordinary people of the world, or how difficult & deadly much of the past was for so many.

It's so much easier to argue "X goes against my client's religious principles" to the Supreme Court when there's no central religious authority to double-check what your religious beliefs ought to include and exclude.

Would more dogma and doctrine help here?

We've become so accustomed to lawbreaking that this probably won't ripple much, but it is important not to forget that firing the IRS Commissioner for refusing to break the law--if that's in fact what happened here--would and should prompt immediate articles of impeachment in any other presidency.
